Social Inhibition: Theoretical Review and Implications for a Dual Social Inhibition Model within the Circumplex of Personality Metatraits

The purpose of this paper is to present a new model social inhibition (a) conceptualised as dual structured construct including shyness and modesty, (b) showing the complexity diversity these two forms across various domains psychosocial functioning (i.e., self-image, cognitive, emotional, behavioural). Locating within space Circumplex Personality Metatraits enabled us identify conceptually adjacent constructs put latter into broad personality context. Through supplementary meta-analyses relations modesty with Big Five traits, we confront our theoretical proposition existing empirical findings. Our implies that might be successfully treated disposition related shared core elements, but distinct differentially targeted forms—more neurotic dysfunctional more agreeable adaptive modesty.
